The ability to run your own home PC service is something that will take 15 minutes of your time each month to complete and benefit you by keeping your PC stable, secure and optimized. The following is brief checklist of free things you can complete on a scheduled basis.

Prior to making any alterations or adjustments to your computer it should be obvious to do a backup of your personal data. The following actions are relatively unobtrusive (so shouldn't cause an issue) but it is best to be safe, than sorry.

Get the latest device drivers and security patches from the Windows update service. Most users automate this process (the recommended approach) so you won't need to manually run it. Update your anti-virus with the latest definitions prior to running any scans.

Run a registry cleaner application (free/commercial) on the Windows registry file every few weeks. Any home PC service should include this especially if you are adding/modifying/removing applications on a regular basis.

Scan internal and external drives and storage devices for viruses on a daily/weekly basis. If you don't use the internet often (the main source of viruses) then a weekly scan will suffice.

Defragment all partitions on your hard drives using the Windows Disk Defragmenter. This can be slow to run on the first occasion but is faster on subsequent times. Users who create many large files (e.g. using audio/video editing applications) may need to defragment weekly, but for most users a monthly run would suffice.

Clean out the drives of any extraneous data. This includes temporary files used by browsers and any software that you are not using anymore (use the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to safely remove applications).

Use the System Performance tab (Control Panel > System) to tweak your performance settings, use of visual effects and memory allocation. Increasing the paging file (if there is free disk space) is a great performance booster.
