What Causes Driver Problems?

All computers have hardware attached to them; this can be soundcards, video cards, USB ports, etc. Basically anything on your computer that is not a software program. What these drivers do is serve as a communications link between software applications and hardware devices attached to your computer. The drivers basically tell the software and Windows how the hardware work and how to use them.

The most important thing with drivers is to keep them updated, and make sure they are compatible with other drivers and applications on your computer. When dealing with drivers, three things will usually lead to an error:

Missing Driver

If a driver is not found, it pretty much speaks for itself; the driver is not present on your computer. This may occur if something went wrong during installation or something interfered with the installation and prevented the driver from being properly installed.

This error can also occur if you uninstalled the software application that came with the driver.

Incompatible Driver

Since the drivers are the communication ports between hardware and software, it is important that they speak the same language. But sometimes they don't. One driver may be designed to work with one program, but not the other and vice versa. What you have is an incompatible driver. There's nothing wrong with neither the driver, nor the program, they just don't work together.

Damaged Driver

If your driver becomes damaged for any reason, it can lead to a variety of errors. Often, Windows will display an error message with an error code you can use to troubleshoot the error, if the driver is not vital and is not required by Windows to operate properly, the hardware the driver runs will not work.

If the driver runs a rather important hardware device, such as your graphics card, or audio, chances are your computer will crash and display what is known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Damaged drivers are most commonly the result of a bad installation, but more than one thing can go wrong during this process.

Listed below are things most likely to go wrong:

If something is wrong with a device you have had for a while, it may have automatically updated itself, or you have updated it yourself, and the new driver has become damaged.
